Le Morne
Le Morne Mauritius
Located on the southwest of Mauritius, Le Morne is an isolated rocky mountain and peninsula. Le Morne has grown steadily but slowly maintaining its exclusivity. The Le Morne Mountain, the most famous in the area, is known for the runaway slaves which made their way up the mountain to hide from capture. A wooden bridge was built for them to go up and down until everyone had reached the hideout. When slavery was abolished, the slaves misunderstood the approaching expeditionís intentions and jumped off the mountain to their deaths.
Le Morne offers a lovely white sand beach which is ideal for swimming and a popular surfing destination for pro surfers. Besides swimming in the warm turquoise waters, the area is also popular for snorkeling and under-water walking.
A visit to the Pample Mousses Royal Botanical Gardens is not to be missed. The gardens are enclosed by iron railings manufactured in 1862 and many different plants, fruit and palms can be seen here. Le Morne offers a good choice of restaurants in the area including Le Blue Marlin which is located on the beach and is open for breakfast and lunch. The La Palma has an a la carte menu, and is very popular making pre-booking essential. La Ravanne serving local Creole cuisine, is situated under the stars and can be reached by piprogue which depart regularly from the Blue Marlin restaurant.
Besides swimming which is probably what the children will be inclined to do there is snorkeling and under-water walking.
